College Softball

The Southern Oregon softball team finally gets to play at University Field on the SOU campus this weekend as the Raiders continue Cascade Conference play with a pair of key doubleheaders.

The Raiders (7-10, 4-2) host Corban (12-9) Friday in a huge doubleheader at 2 p.m. and Northwest Christian (7-11, 1-3) in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Southern Oregon is coming off a huge opening week of Cascade Conference play. The Raiders swept then-11th-ranked Concordia and followed that up with a sweep of Eastern Oregon before dropping a pair of games at College of Idaho.

The 4-2 week put the Raiders right in the middle of the Cascade Conference title chase.

Junior pitcher Jordyn Kurtz went 2-1 last week, with her only setback coming when the Raiders were no-hit at College of Idaho. Kurtz had an ERA of 1.40 in her three outings and struck out 16.

Offensively, sophomore Rayna Okimoto continued her torrid pace. Okimoto leads the Raiders and the conference in batting at .473, has a team-high seven home runs, 18 RBI and a slugging percentage of .909. Tanisha Burch holds the school record for home runs with 11 in 2006. Angie Chaplin holds the school record for slugging percentage with a .729 effort in 2003.

Junior Katie Moy also has her eyes on a record. Already the school's single-season record holder for doubles with 15 last year, Moy ranks third on the career doubles list with 29. Brandi Brown holds the record with 33.
