Southern Oregon head football coach Craig Howard announced Thursday that Matt Toblin has been named the Raiders' new defensive coordinator.

Toblin, who served as a an assistant at Florida State from 1999-2001, has coached and played for Howard in the past.

"Matt has played for me and coached for me and I'm confident that our relationship will help us get off to a great start," Howard said. "Matt is one of the brightest young football minds I've been around."

Toblin comes to SOU after spending two years at Clay High School in Florida. Toblin took over a program that had won three playoff games in 50 years and in two years with Toblin at the helm, Clay had won two district titles.

Toblin worked with Howard at Nease High School as defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach from 2004-08. During that stretch, Nease appeared in three state championship games, won 58 games and only gave up 10.5 points per game.

Over the last four years, 57 players that Toblin coached have signed to play college football.

As a student at Florida State, Toblin served as an assistant for Bobby Bowden's football program and coached in two national championship games.

With the addition of Toblin, the new football staff now consists of six coaches, with a few more to be added in the next couple weeks.

Howard, Chris Fisk (offensive line), Ken Fasnacht (wide receivers) and Greg Stewart (running backs) will coach on the offensive side of the ball.

Toblin (defensive coordinator/defensive backs) and Berk Brown (linebackers) are on the defensive side of the ball.
