Elmer Walter Byrd was born Sept. 1, 1911 in Elk City, Oklahoma to George Willis and Ada Byrd. He was the second oldest of 9 children. The family move to Talent, OR in 1925. Elmer attended Talent schools.

The family moved to a ranch on Crowson Road in Ashland in 1929. He worked on the ranch until starting training as a Western Union Telegrapher. He started his career in the lumber industry in 1933. He worked for several area mills and was a partner in the Farmer Bros. Lumber Co. he retired from Fruit Growers Supply Co in 1973.

Elmer was an avid fisherman, hunter, and motorcyclist. He enjoyed woodworking. He married Genevieve Farmer in 1938. Following her death in 1979, he married Ula Knight in 1980. He is survived by his wife; daughters Florence Carolyn Windt (Peter), Dolly Rapp (William), Bonnie McCormick (Branson), and loving stepdaughters Valerie Langford (Dexter) and Carolyn Smith; grandchildren Terri Windt, Wesley McCormick, Fred Rapp, Genny Rapp, and Todd Hanson, Minde Mayfield, Dolce Pacquette, Lyla Warner, and 8 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Clarence, Allen, Curtis, a newborn; sisters Neva, Pauline, and Charlaine.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 12, 9:00 to 10:30 am at Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. A graveside service will follow at 11:00 am at Mountain View Cemetery in Ashland.
