MEDFORD — For a while, Ashland and South Medford almost looked like equals.

Almost.

"We went in at halftime and addressed a few things," South Medford head coach Dennis Murphy said. "Then in the third quarter, we came out and played like we should."

Only one South Medford player scored in double figures as the balanced Panthers overwhelmed Ashland in the second half en route to a 58-32 Southern Oregon Hybrid blowout Friday at the South Medford High gym.

Senior post Kevin Thibeault had eight points and eight rebounds for the Panthers (12-2), who have won three games in a row and 10 of their last 11 heading into Tuesday's game against North Medford.

Ashland fell to 7-7.

The Panthers led by five at the break after committing 11 turnovers. In the second half their defense took over, holding the Grizzlies to 5-for-26 shooting. South, meanwhile, sharpened up its own offense, committing just two turnovers after the break and hitting 8 of 16 shots in the third quarter to open up a 22-point lead.

"We got through tonight," Murphy said, "but with North coming in on Tuesday, if we don't crank it up a few notches it isn't going to be pretty."

Junior guard Matt Retzlaff scored 11 points and senior wings Sean Pearson and Josh Havird added nine for the Panthers, who outrebounded Ashland 40-29.

Junior guard Billy Hansen scored nine points and junior guard Jake McCoy added six for the Grizzlies, who suffered their worst loss since a 25-point setback to Crescent Valley on Dec. 18.

"We played really tough defense in the first half, then we just ran out of steam," Ashland coach Larry Kellems said. "South's good. I can see why they are where they are. But I felt like they were definitely somebody we should have had a closer game with."
