YREKA, Calif. — A Somes Bar, Calif., man was arraigned on an attempted murder charge Monday after allegedly shooting his girlfriend in her arm while she was driving a car toward him during an alcohol-fueled argument Thursday at their rural home, authorities said.

Bail was set at $500,000 for Eugene White, 42, during his initial appearance Monday in Siskiyou County Superior Court in Yreka, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department.

White was then returned to the Siskiyou County Jail, where he has been lodged since his arrest Thursday evening, deputies said.

Siskiyou County sheriff's Capt. Jim Betts said alcohol was involved during a Thursday afternoon argument between White and Tina Burns, 40, at the home they share at Butler Flat along the Salmon River.

During the argument, Burns got into her vehicle and tried to drive into White, who was armed with a .30-06 caliber rifle, Betts said.

White allegedly then fired a single shot through the windshield, striking Burns in her right arm, Betts said.

Burns then drove to the Somes Bar Store and called authorities at 4:50 p.m., deputies said.

She was taken by ambulance to Yreka and later airlifted first to Medford and then to the Sacred Heard Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield, Betts said.

She was listed Monday in good condition, a medical center nursing supervisor said.
