A fast start helped the Southern Oregon men's basketball team snap a three-game losing streak with a 71-63 victory over Northwest Christian on Thursday in Eugene.

Southern Oregon improved to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in Cascade Conference play and also snapped an eight-game losing streak to Northwest Christian. Southern Oregon travels to Corban tonight.

The Beacons fell to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

Austin Wolfer turned in a season-high 21 points to go with nine rebounds for the Raiders. Wolfer went 7-for-8 from the field and 7-for-9 from the free throw line. Jordan Highland had 15 points and eight rebounds.

Kellen Spicer had 15 points to lead Northwest Christian.

The Raiders jumped out to an early 6-0 lead then held the Beacons to 3 of 17 shooting early in the contest to control of the game.

SOU pushed the lead to 24-14 with 5:32 to play in the first half on a layup and free throw by Highland. A Highland steal led to a layup by Wolfer for a 26-14 SOU advantage.

The lead grew to 32-18 late in the half after a pair of Wolfer free throws and two more free throws by the senior helped the Raiders lead 36-23 at the half.

Southern Oregon shot 56 percent (14 of 25) in the first half, while Northwest Christian shot 29 percent (8 of 27).

The Beacons made a run in the second half, cutting the lead to 49-46 on a 3-pointer by Brian Hampton, but freshman Kyle Tedder answered his own 3-pointer to make the lead 52-46. Two minutes later, Hampton hit another 3, but once again Tedder stole his thunder with a 3-pointer of his own for a 55-49 SOU lead with just over seven minutes to play.

Back-to-back baskets by Wolfer put the Raiders back in control at 62-51.

Women's Basketball

Four Raiders scored in double-digits as Southern Oregon used a huge second half to come from behind for a 90-79 victory over Northwest Christian Thursday in Eugene.

Southern Oregon improved to 9-7 overall and 3-2 in Cascade Conference play and travels to Corban tonight. Northwest Christian fell to 4-9 overall and 0-4 in the CC.

Josi McDermott had her best game as a Raider, scoring 23 points with three 3-pointers. Whitney Scott had 19 points and four 3-pointers, while Jamie Roupp finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Alexi Smith had 13 points.

Sheena Alexander had 22 points to lead Northwest Christian.

Northwest Christian started the game fast and led by 19 with 7:34 to play in the half.

The Raiders battled back and cut the lead to 48-35 at the half, thanks to holding the Beacons without a field goal for the final 2:34 of the half.

A pair of baskets each by Krystal Smith and Scott to start the second half helped SOU cut the lead to 52-46 early in the half. McDermott pulled the Raiders within 58-54 with a 3-pointer with 11:31 to play. A jumper by Roupp and McDermott free throws cut the lead to two at 60-58.

Following a Northwest Christian layup, Scott brought the Raiders to within one at 62-61 with her third 3-pointer of the game. McDermott then tied the game at 62-62 with a free throw at the 8:33 mark.

Celonna Arrington gave SOU its first lead since early in the first half with a 3-pointer for a 67-66 advantage with 7:32 to go.

McDermott added a pair of free throws and then a 3-pointer for a 75-68 SOU lead with just over three minutes to play.

With 2:20 to go, Scott hit her fourth 3-pointer of the game to gave the Raiders a 78-70 lead and it was all SOU after that.

SOU outscored NCU 55-31 in the second half.

Boys Basketball

Junior guard Billy Hansen had 26 points and 11 rebounds to help Ashland snap a four-game losing streak with a 55-45 win over Marist that clinched for the Grizzlies seventh place in the Les Schwab Summit Holiday Tournament Thursday in Bend.

Starting point guard Jake McCoy added seven points and Ethan Schlecht and Wes Hitchko chipped in six apiece for the Grizzlies (5-5), who host North Valley on Tuesday.

Marist fell to 2-7.
