For all the hopes Ashland head coach Larry Kellems had of keeping Tuesday's boys basketball game close against North Medford, they were soon dashed in a second-quarter flurry of activity by the Black Tornado.

Ashland trailed only 15-11 heading into the second quarter, but North Medford cranked up the pressure and seemed to convert at will in turning the nonconference game into a runaway 75-41 triumph.

The Black Tornado shot a sizzling 12-for-16 in the second quarter and outscored the Grizzlies 31-9.

"That second quarter was not pretty at all," said Kellems, whose team dropped to 3-2. "We were using timeouts to try to stop the bleeding but it wasn't happening. We'd get back out there, turn it over and away they'd go."

Kellems said the Grizzlies easily reached double figures in turnovers in the second quarter, and the Black Tornado (3-0) was more than happy to capitalize on the extra chances.

Derek Mautz led North Medford with 13 points.

Billy Hansen had 11 points to lead Ashland and Wes Hitchko added eight.

Ashland returns to the court Friday at 7:15 p.m. for its opening game of the Ashland Rotary Invitational. The Grizzlies will face Henley, with Summit and Crescent Valley also competing in the tourney.

"We can hardly wait until Friday to get this bad taste out of our mouths," said Kellems.

Girls Basketball

It took a little while for the North Medford girls basketball team to warm up, but once they did, there was no stopping the Black Tornado in a 49-34 nonleague win over Ashland.

The teams played to a near-draw through one quarter of play, with North Medford barely getting the better of the visiting Grizzlies, 8-7.

The second quarter, however, was a whole different matter.

The Black Tornado scorched the nets with all three of its 3-pointers and put the game away with a 24-5 run over the eight-minute span en route to a 49-34 victory at North Medford High.

"They were just flowing really well and we weren't," said Ashland head coach Emily Brookins. "They're very fast and they really utilize their speed."

After the sluggish start, North (3-2) picked up the pace with its full-court pressure and turned turnovers into layups and fed off that energy.

Allison Shulenberger had 11 points and three steals for Ashland (2-2), while Sarah Pavlich added six points and Taylor Zehren had four assists. Willie Michiels, Shelby Minor and Katie Bottimore each pulled down five rebounds.
