Mary Kinney, 79, of Ashland, Ore., passed Sunday October 31, 2010, at Willow House Adult Foster Care in Phoenix. Mary was born June 21, 1931 in Medford, Ore, to Laverne and Hazel (Miller) Newman. She was raised in Grants Pass. Ore., the oldest daughter of ten siblings, starting her on her journey of nurturing and mediating. Mary graduated from Grants Pass High School in 1949.

On March 15, 1952, she married the love of her life, Charles Chuck Richard Kinney, at the Newman United Methodist Church in Grants Pass. Mary's working career started as an elementary school secretary at Lincoln Elementary School in Grants Pass. After her marriage to Chuck, they moved to Ashland to raise their three children. Mary contributed her time and energy to PTA, Blue Bird/Campfire Girls, and First United Methodist Church. She then made her way back into the elementary school system, first at Briscoe Elementary School in Ashland and then spent 17 years as secretary at Walker Elementary School in Ashland.

Mary retired in 1982 to travel with Chuck, as they spent their winters in Arizona and made numerous trips around the country, meeting and making new friends as they went. Mary was always thankful of the people that she met in her life. So from Mary, Thank you. Thank you to all the people that touched her life and thank you to those who let her be a part of their lives.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, on May 31, 2009; and her son, Dick, on July 30, 2005. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Patti Kinney, of Va.; her daughter, Chris (Tim) Jones, of Phoenix, Ore.; and son, Ron (Kathy) Kinney, of Talent, Ore.; brothers, Sherman (Donna) Newman, of Grants Pass, Ore., Ole (Lauretta) Newman, of Brookings, Ore., Hap Newman, of Rochester, Wash. and Mike (Kaye) Newman, of Portland, Ore.; sisters, Zoe Stormes, of Grants Pass , Ore. and Roberta (Steve) Mitchell, of White City, Ore.; nothing made Mary happier than to be in the presence of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ross (Jenny) Kinney, and their children, Sean and Ryan, of Talent, Ore., Athena and her son, Payton Turner, of Talent, Ore., Amber Kinney, of Talent, Ore., Maia (Steven) Rossiello, and their children, Ben and Lilly, of Pa., Flynn Kinney, of Pa., Mary Kinney Botindari, of Talent, Ore., and Ada (Skyler) Conner-Coash, and their child, Emma, of Medford, Ore.

A memorial service celebrating Mary's life will be held on Saturday, November 13, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Ashland.
