After composing more than 700 originals, pianist John Nilsen says he has no problem finding inspiration for more.

"There's 88 keys on the piano, and if you hit them in different ways, you're going to be inspired," he says.

The Portland pianist will perform everything from boogie-woogie and ballads to jazz-flavored and peaceful compositions at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at the RoxyAnn Winery, 3285 Hillcrest Road, Medford.

As far as his set list goes, he has no set list. Nilsen says he prefers to keep things fresh by playing what he feels in the moment, with respect to the setting and audience.

Nilsen, one of the Northwest's most successful recording artists, has released 17 albums, including four solo albums; sold more than 800,000 copies; established an independent recording company, Magic Wing; and performs about 240 concerts annually.

Nilsen's most recent album, "Places I Go," released in April, weaves together elements of folk, jazz and classical. The artist is eager to begin recording his 18th album this fall.

Nilsen has been a student of the piano for 46 years and guitar for about 40 years. After graduating from Southern Oregon College (Southern Oregon University) in 1974, Nilsen performed as a guitarist and vocalist in several Ashland folk and rock bands for more than a decade.

Since then, he has dedicated himself to his solo career although he frequently performs piano with the John Nilsen Trio and guitar and vocals with the band John Nilsen and the Swimfish.

Tickets to Nilsen's solo concert are $25. For more information, call 541-776-2315, ext. 1, or visit www.johnnilsen.com.
