Leo Decker, 5, of Ashland, son of Angela Howe Decker and Mark Decker, won honorable mention in the Oregon State Poetry Association student contest recently with his poem, "Beautiful Sky."

He won a certificate, $5 and publication in the OSPA anthology "Cascadia."

Leo is a pre-kindergarten student at Pilot Rock Christian School in Ashland.

His mother, a columnist for the Ashland Daily Tidings, said because Leo is still learning to read and write, he dictated the poem to her and she wrote it down.

When she read it back to him, he made a few changes, she said.

Leo read his poem Wednesday at an OSPA student reading at the Rogue Gallery in Medford.
