Southern Oregon University awarded its 2010 President's Medal to John Schweiger, owner of Coming Attractions Theatres Inc., during the annual President's Recognition Dinner at the Stevenson Union Thursday evening.
In presenting the award, SOU President Mary Cullinan cited Schweiger's support of youth-related activities, assistance to the underprivileged and to non-profit organizations, and his longtime commitment to the Raiders, SOU and the Southern Oregon community. Schweiger recently became president of the Raider Club for a second term.
Coming Attractions Theatres donates thousands of passes each year to nonprofit events, Cullinan said.
"John has also generously provided the resources for the fabulous movie trailers featuring Southern Oregon University," she said. "These (trailers) have become a signature tool for our student recruitment efforts on the West Coast."
The SOU trailers run on more than 75 movie screens in communities stretching from Eureka, Calif., to Aberdeen, Wash.
Schweiger founded Coming Attractions Theatres in Ashland 25 years ago. The company has expanded to include Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Northern California.
He is heralded as the founding adviser and benefactor of the Ashland Independent Film Festival. Since the festival's founding in 2001, Schweiger has provided the use of the Varsity Theatre and office space in support of the non-profit venture.
Established in 1984, the Southern Oregon University President's Medal is given each year to a person (or in rare instances, a company) whose exemplary service to the university, the region and the greater community represents qualities such as compassion, integrity and service.
