An Ashland service club has made a donation to the Ashland Senior Center that will enable people at the center to read who otherwise could not.

The Senior Center recently received a gift of a Telesensory Magnifier donated by the Ashland Lions Club. The magnifier is a closed-circuit device designed for use by people who have visual impairments, including legal blindness, which make it difficult or impossible to read ordinary printed materials.

"This is an enduring and meaningful gift, and it allows us to offer the visually impaired a way to achieve greater independence through innovative technology," said Christine Dodson, senior program director at the Ashland Senior Center.

The device can magnify text size up to 50 time, and displays printed materials in color, or high-contrast black text on a white background, or white text on a black background. The white text on black or negative image is useful for glare reduction, according to Senior Center staff.

Use of the Magnifier is offered to anyone with a need between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Ashland Senior Center, 1699 Homes Ave.

The Ashland Senior Program provides a support system to the older residents of Ashland, working to enable them to live more independently and to continue as contributing members of the community. It also provides a venue for social interaction through recreational and health-related activities and educational opportunities.

The Ashland Lions Club is involved in many community service activities, including sponsoring the Boy Scouts, providing the meals for the Feast of Will and Fourth of July celebrations in Lithia Park and working on projects for the Band Shell in Lithia Park.

The club is also part of Southern Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing, providing eye glasses and hearing aids for low income people; mobile health screening units offering free health screening for adults and for children in schools; and sight and hearing surgical procedures for Oregonians through the Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.
