Kim Fritts has announced her resignation as head softball coach at Southern Oregon University, effective March 14.

Assistant coach Kolby Schooley has been named interim head coach by SOU Athletic Director Matt Sayre and will finish out the season. A search for a replacement will begin soon.

"We know what a tough decision this has been for Kim," Sayre said. "She did a great job not only for the softball program, but also for the athletic department and we wish her well in her new career."

Fritts will begin a new job with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department next week.

"This was not an easy thing for me to do," Fritts said. "I really appreciate the opportunity this University has given me and will truly miss going out to practice every day and to the games. But at this time, this was a decision that I had to make for me and my family."

In her three-plus years in charge of the Raiders, Fritts led SOU to a 52-75 overall record. Last year, Fritts earned Cascade Conference Coach of the Year honors after leading SOU to a 22-15 overall record and an 18-6 mark in Cascade Conference play.

Schooley is in her second year as the top assistant for the softball program.

"I have complete confidence in a seamless transition between Kim and Kolby," Sayre said. "Kolby comes from a strong softball background, knows the game and knows how to teach it. We are excited to have Kolby on board."

Schooley graduated from the College of Charleston in 2007 and was a three-year letterwinner on the softball team. Schooley served as a Utility Player for three years and as a sophomore and junior was coached by Fritts.
