Billy Hansen scored eight of his team-high 13 points in the third quarter as Ashland built a comfortable lead before holding off Eagle Point for a 57-52 Southern Sky Conference boys basketball victory Tuesday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Hansen, a sophomore guard, nailed two 3-pointers to help the eighth-ranked Grizzlies take a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter, where Eagle Point stormed back to get within three points inside the final minute. Ashland's Jonathan Mills iced the game at the free throw line with 20 seconds to go.

"It wasn't a meaningful game for us, and in that fourth quarter we really struggled," Ashland assistant coach Nathe Futer said. "Playing a team three times is awfully tough and they played a solid game."

The Grizzlies (17-8, 10-2 SSC), who had already clinched the top seed in this week's SSC tournament, will host a seeding game at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. The winner of that game will host No. 6 Glencoe in the second round of the Class 5A state playoffs, while the loser will travel to face No. 2 Wilsonville.

"Saturday's enormous," Futer said. "It would be fun to have a rematch with Wilsonville, but we'd much prefer to play Glencoe."

Ashland lost to Wilsonville in the second round of the 2009 state playoffs.
