The Kiwanis Club of Ashland has recognized Ben Small as its November 2009 Student of the Month.

Small, son of Shelly Austin and Matt Small, has maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.793. As a sophomore, Ben was elected to be one of nine Natural Helpers. These are students recognized by their peers for their natural helping and leadership abilities. His junior year was spent in Portugal living and studying like a Portuguese teenager. During Small's senior year, he started the Culture Club, designed to bring together students of all cultures to talk about cultural differences and tensions caused by common misinterpretations. As a freshman and senior, he was crowned homecoming prince. Small has applied to several colleges and universities, but his preference is the east coast and specifically Cornell University.

As co-student body president (with Noah Sohl), Small has worked to bring new programs designed to make the AHS campus more sustainable.

These programs include a campus-wide composting system and an incentive program to motivate students to walk, bike or use public transportation to get to school.

He also started High School Community Forums to give students and community members a chance to communicate effectively with the school's leadership class and administration.
