For the month of September, 2009, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognized Anna Ortlip-Hume as its student of the month.

Ortlip-Hume is the daughter of Katie Ortlip and Michael Hume.

Ortlip-Hume has consistently challenged herself in the classroom. AP classes at AHS are available, but budget cuts and singleton offerings sometimes make it difficult for students involved with so many extracurricular activities, such as the Rogue News, yearbook and upper division language courses, but Anna took full advantage, according to Kiwanis officials.

She fit three AP classes into her schedule and performed admirably in all three, a Kiwanis press release stated. She is maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.762.

Ortlip-Hume is the Rogue News editor-in-chief. She has participated in various leadership activities, including Model United Nations, Peer Jury, Teen Theatre, Global Citizen's Corp, Academy Counselor, Fresh Start Counselor, and she has been a fundraising chair. Ortlip-Hume also has been part of the National Honor Society, and she has received three student-of-the-year recognitions for Spanish.

In addition to a full academic schedule, Ortlip-Hume found time to volunteer for more than 400 hours of various community service opportunities.

A senior from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year.

Each student of the month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May, 2010, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship."

The Ashland Kiwanis Club is focused on supporting learning and leadership opportunities for the youth of our community through local fundraising and volunteerism.

Anyone who would like to learn more about Kiwanis and get involved in its many programs for children and others in the community, can call 488-0532.
