Former Ashland High girls basketball star Kelsey McKinnis is already making an impact as a true freshman at Puget Sound.

The 2009 AHS graduate was named the Northwest Conference women's basketball student-athlete of the week Tuesday after leading the Loggers to a weekend sweep over Whitworth and Whitman. McKinnis, a 5-foot-8 guard, averaged 21.5 points per game in the two wins to help Puget Sound improve to 13-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Against Whitman, she scored 27 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer in the final seconds.

McKinnis has started in 14 of 15 games for the NCAA Division III Loggers and is averaging 8.9 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She's also shooting 85 percent from the free throw line and 34 percent from 3-point land.
