Ashland police are working to identify two people suspected of stealing $20 in Senor Sam's gift certificates and cashing the certificates at the Mexican restaurant, where they were caught on camera Sunday.

The gift certificates were stolen — along with cash, checks and lottery tickets — from an unlocked car in the 800 block of Clay Street sometime between 9 p.m. on Christmas and noon the following day, according to police.

After the theft, the restaurant was alerted, said Sgt. Hector Meletich with the Ashland Police Department.

Officials at the restaurant, located at 1634 Ashland St., contacted police at 10:38 a.m. Sunday to report that the suspects had cashed the certificates, according to police.

Detectives may release images of the suspects if they are unable to identify them, Meletich said.

The incident should serve to remind Ashland residents to secure their vehicles, he said.

"Not only during the holiday season, but throughout the year, people have to use caution when leaving items in their vehicles," he said. "If you leave items in plain view, people who are opportunistic can take advantage of that."
