Banking on support from viewers around the country and friends and family back home, Grants Pass resident Hairo Torres will perform tonight on the NBC reality talent show "America's Got Talent."

Torres, a contortionist break dancer, is one of 20 semifinalists competing for the title in the current season of the show, in which a three-panel judge and viewers choose their favorite performer.

The show airs at 9 tonight on KOBI Channel 5.

The dancer's girlfriend, Shawna Koeper of Grants Pass, said she and her boyfriend's family members wanted to spread the word that Torres was still in the running after some media announced that he had been sent home by judges.

"The only reason we're worried about people knowing he's still on is that we saw some stuff in different places that said he'd been cut, and he hasn't," Koeper said. "We don't want him to lose votes because that's how he'll win."

A break dancer for a dozen years, Torres auditioned for the show earlier this year by video, then in person, in Seattle.

Dubbed a "one-man Cirque de Soleil" by show judge David Hasselhoff, Torres was one of five acts that scored as a viewer favorite after his first performance.

The winner of the competition will get $1 million, paid over a period of years, and the chance to do a Las Vegas show in October.

Break dancing aside, the 22-year-old Torres works at Fire Mountain Gems, a Grants Pass bead and jewelry supply company, and Game Dungeon, a video store in Grants Pass.
