Two Medford residents escaped with minor injuries Thursday in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 that claimed the life of a Washington state man.

Oregon State Police said Glafiro Javier Fernandez, 76, of Lakewood, Wash., was pronounced dead at the scene, about a half mile south of exit 40, the Gold Hill exit.

Shontae Diedre Wright, 25, said she and Jeremy Dale Smith, 23, were driving north when Fernandez's car rammed them from behind. Fernandez's car rolled after the impact and came to rest on its top.

State police said all three were using safety restraints. They will investigate whether Fernandez may have had an underlying medical problem that could have been a factor in the crash.

Northbound traffic was slowed for several hours while police investigated the accident site.
