Conservatism is finally defeated

In many ways it is "Conservatism" itself that has been defeated in the recent election. Whether "Conservatism" is in fact a philosophy or just a failure of the human spirit is debatable, but what is obvious to most of us is that it's influence is to blame for our nation's current problems.

For almost 50 years it has been in vogue to blame liberals for all of our nation's ills, yet for all that time it was actually "Conservatism" that was killing our spirit, our intellect and our imagination.

The problem with opposition to change for it's own sake, is that innovation stops and powerful institutions become lazy. People without vision rise to the top, which only serves the interests of the status quo. Fear becomes the order of the day and change becomes the enemy.

Karl Rove and George Bush are the logical outcome.

Bitterness and lack of imagination come to define the national dialogue. Destruction and divisiveness characterise the political culture.

It is "Consevatism" that has brought our nation to it's knees.

Time to save planet, not just nation

"What's good for General Motors is good for America," is the right answer to the wrong question. High economic growth and mass consumption is big fun, like cocaine. Rising markets make us feel rich, beautiful and smart. Everybody has a great time until someone calls the cops.

Somebody always calls the cops.

The right question is whether what's good for America is good for the survival of life on Earth. Five hundred years of addiction to sugar has led western civilization to the brink of collapse. I could buy one more candy bar and push us all right over the edge!

Another Great Depression sounds like bitter medicine, but we've imposed stringent economic measures on developing nations at our whim for over 50 years.

It's time for we Americans to take our own medicine.

To make it through these times, we are going to have to save the world.

Let the pardons begin!

Barack Obama has risen from humble beginnings to the power of the Presidency. But, every one of us has the presidential power to pardon a turkey on Thanksgiving.

In fact, here are some reasons to skip the turkey this Thanksgiving:

You are what you eat. Who wants to be a butterball?

You won't have to call Poultry Hotline to keep your family alive.

You won't sweat the environment and food resources devastation guilt trip.

You won't spend a sleepless night wondering how the turkey lived and died.

Your body will appreciate a holiday from saturated fat, cholesterol, and hormones.

My family's Thanksgiving dinner will include a tofurky, lentil roast, mashed potatoes, corn stuffing, stuffed squash, chestnut soup, candied yams, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and carrot cake. An internet search on vegetarian Thanksgiving got us lots of recipes and other information.

Since most people will be buying at least a few gifts during the next month, why not buy them in Ashland? Help support our local business people and our community. Please think "Ashland" instead of the Internet when you're shopping.

By the way, I'm not selling gift items myself. I'm just one person among so many who simply love this town and the people in it and want us all to prosper!

Paddington Station says thanks

A big "thank you" to our community for your support for our business over the last 35 years, and specifically for the incredible turnout for our Anniversary Open House on Saturday, Nov. 22. It was a smashing success.

Thanks to our wonderful customers and our kind and supportive neighboring businesses.

In addition to all of the activities, events and live music during the day, over 380 pounds of food and $75 dollars in cash was collected for the Ashland Emergency Food Bank.

We at Paddington Station would like you to remember all of the loyal and community-minded local retail establishments as you do your holiday shopping. Shop local!

Thanks to Ashland firefighters

Here's a big thank you to the awesome Ashland firefighters who volunteered their trucks and time to make the AHS Water Polo Teams' parade a major success. It would NOT have been the same without you. The players will never forget riding high atop your trucks!

Thanks so much for your "ever-ready" support!
