  • The Mighty Lonesomes, a local bluegrass quartet, strummed and harmonized an original tune at the latest Tidings Café mini concert performance.
"Walkin' Out the Door" was written by lead vocalist and guitarist Patrick Connell, inspired by a less-than-ideal living situation.
"I was living somewhere and a disaster moved in. That was a cue for me to leave," Connell said of the song's lyrics.
The four young men arrived at the Daily Tidings office on Siskiyou Boulevard unsure of what to expect, yet ready to sing and play their acoustic set with their string instruments in tow. The warm up harmony and tuning echoed through the circulation bay and into the newsroom as the two videographers set up the studio.
The Mighty Lonesomes have been playing together for about two and a half years, with all but the mandolin player, Phil Johnson, living together. Johnson was the last to join the quartet after a move to Ashland with his wife from Austin, Texas.
Thad Jacobson, a Southern Oregon University student graduating in communication, kept a steady twangy rhythm on his banjo. Depth to the song was thrummed in by Peter Koelsch on his bulky upright bass.
Between the four of them, they have all the bluegrass bases covered, including their seamless vocal harmony.
Connell, Johnson, and Koelsch all keep day jobs at the Ashland Food Co-op, furthering the band's tight-knit relationship.
"It was fun and definitely felt like we were on a skillet. It was our first time in a newsroom and having multiple cameras there," Connell said of the group's first video performance.

Upcoming shows for the group include a stop at Stillwater tonight at 9 p.m., June 20 at noon at Bear Creek Park in Medford and June 26 at 6 p.m. at Rising Sun Farms in Phoenix for a local singles night.
