MEDFORD – Nine of Jackson County’s mayors are proclaiming June 1-14 “Mayors United Helping Feed Our Community,” a county-wide campaign to raise $50,000 to help feed clients of the ACCESS Food Share Pantry System. Following proclamations made by the cities of Ashland, Jacksonville, Talent and Phoenix, City of Medford Mayor Gary Wheeler will make a proclamation at the Medford city council meeting Thursday, June 4, at noon, and Central Point Mayor Hank Williams will make a proclamation at the Central Point city council meeting June 11.
Eagle Point Mayor Leon Sherman, Rogue River Mayor John Bond, and Shady Cove Mayor Ron Holthusen made proclamations adopted by each municipality’s city council last week; Talent Mayor Don Steyskal and Phoenix Mayor Carlos DeBritto made proclamations June 1; and Jacksonville Mayor Bruce Garrett and Ashland Mayor John Stromberg made proclamations June 2.
The Mayors United campaign culminates June 14 in the Mayors United crescendo event, billed as the “biggest party of summer,” from 4-7 p.m. indoors at the Jackson County Fairgrounds & Expo Park. Tickets are $25, and include dancing, live music from Rogue Suspects and the Karen Lovely Band, wine, beer, food and refreshments, including a “Tapas” contest for the Best Hearty Appetizers in the Valley.
“This has been a tremendous partnership between the many leaders within Jackson County to work together to help feed the hungry,” said Gary Miller, ACCESS Inc. Executive Director. “The early community response so far has been very encouraging with ticket sales both through the mail and on our Web site.”
All proceeds from the Mayors United campaign and event will directly benefit clients of ACCESS Food Share, which provides food for over 3,200 families each month. For every dollar donated, ACCESS Food Share is able to distribute five pounds of food, or a meal for a family of five. In 2008-09, ACCESS will distribute over 2.3 million pounds of food, equivalent to over 2.3 million meals, to citizens of Jackson County.
