The Rogue Valley could be hit by thunderstorm activity moving up from northern California.

May 28, 2009 - 9:35 am Thunderstorms are likely in the mountains of Northern California and Southern Oregon today and possible in the Rogue Valley by tonight.

The National Weather Service in Medford has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the region because of the possibility of storms, although the forecast puts the chance of lightning in the Medford area at only 20 percent.

Today's high in Medford is expected to reach the mid 90s, and storms could bring brief downpours, strong wind and small hail, the weather service said.

Forecasters say low pressure off the California coast will push moist, unstable air to the north today and that isolated mountain thunderstorms are expected at the height of the day's heat.

The storms will move from south to north, "perhaps even affecting parts of the Rogue Valley this evening," the hazardous weather statement said.

Stormy weather is possible later in the week as well.
