The Havurah community will host guest rabbi and author Rabbi Goldie Milgram on Thursday, May 28, at 8 p.m. for an evening of study and prayer as the Jewish community celebrates the holiday of Shavuot, also known as Pentecost. Historically, this festival commemorates the receiving of the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. Shavuot is also one of the three festivals when in the times of the Temple, Jewish farmers would make pilgrimage to Jerusalem.

The evening will open with a traditional chanting of the Ten Commandments from the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, followed by a teaching by Rabbi Sue Morningstar on the Book of Ruth.

As is customary on this holiday, the studying will continue until midnight and will conclude with a reading of the first chapter of the Book of Ezekiel.

The evening if free and open to all. The Havurah is located at 185 N. Mountain Ave. Call 488-7716 for information and visit www.havurahshirhadash.org for downloadable calendars of upcoming events.
