Wilder Schaaf completed a sweep of the distance runs and teammates Seena Frantz and Daniel Cowan also qualified for state with strong performances in the second and final day of the Southern Sky Conference district track and field meet Saturday at Oregon Tech.

KLAMATH FALLS — Ashland junior Wilder Schaaf completed a sweep of the distance runs and teammates Seena Frantz and Daniel Cowan also qualified for state with strong performances in the second and final day of the Southern Sky Conference district track and field meet Saturday at Oregon Tech.

Schaaf, who won the 3,000-meter run on Thursday, took the 1,500 in 4 minutes, 9.50 seconds. Frantz placed second in the girls race in 4:55.86 and Cowan was the runner-up in both hurdle events and will also represent the Grizzlies in this week's state meet at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Crater and Klamath Union were the big winners in the team standings. The Crater girls got a well-rounded performance to earn that team title, while KU earned the boys SSC championship.

The Comet girls, who claimed the top three spots in the 800 meters and got a personal-best throw in the shot put from Holly Haga, scored 167.5 points to runner-up Klamath Union's 137.

On the boys side, Crater sprinter Kelley Beck had a leg in four titles, helping his team to third place behind Klamath Union (175.5) and Mazama (115.5). The Comets scored 106.

The top two places and those who met a qualifying standard advance to the Class 5A state meet Friday and Saturday.

Jasmyn Andrews led the surge for the Crater girls in the 800. She won in 2 minutes, 27.09 seconds, followed by teammates Anya Martinez in 2:27.98 and Sarah Hastings in 2:30.96.

Haga threw the shot 36 feet, 9 inches, bettering her previous best by 83/4 inches.

Crater's Kayleigh Tyerman captured the 1,500 in 4:43.98. She also took the 3,000 on Thursday. Frantz was a distance second in 4:55.86.

Megan Van Syoc won the 300 hurdles for the Comets.

Martinez, who entered the pole vault seeded ninth, won the event at 8-4. Eagle Point's Josie Henderson and Crater's Amber Parker were second and third, each clearing 8-4 also.

Eagle Point got a 1-2 finish in the 100 hurdles from Erin Hedrick (16.57) and Jenise Lewis (16.99).

In the boys meet, Beck and teammate Jacob Ziegler each clocked 22.53 in placing first and second, respectively.

Beck also won the 400 in 49.54 and ran on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Josh Dalton of Crater topped rival Daniel Cowan of Eagle Point in the 110 hurdles. Dalton clocked 15.92 to Cowan's 16.06.
