Well, we are deeply in the month of April and things are looking good! The sun is out, the blooms are strutting their stuff and the lawnmowers are purring. This is the time of year to get up to the elbows in dirt, fix the deer netting and find just hat right kind of tomato plant for the garden.
We are banking on romas and beefsteaks, as well as some tiny guys I have no idea what to call but are really tasty when ripe! I love getting out in the garden, smelling the soil and shaking off the frost of winter. This is also the time to think of crispy white wines and clean rosé wines, as the heat is coming on. Also, very fortunately, we have another late spring event to look forward to, something which benefits all of us: The Science of Wine.
This entertaining and informative event is a "don't miss" tour of wonderful wine programs that benefit ScienceWorks, a nonprofit in Ashland, serving 15,000 children and educators from all around Southern Oregon and Northern California. We are very fortunate to live in an area with such a nice event to look forward to.
I have volunteered in the past at ScienceWorks and found it to be very educational, as well as a heck of a lot of fun! This year proves to be even better with a screening of "Bottle Shock" at the Varsity Theater as well as a post-movie reception at the Ashland Springs Hotel. This reception will feature a French and California wine tasting, as well as a buffet dinner. This will happen on Friday evening, May 29.
On Saturday, May 30, There will be a Bus Wine Tour to RoxyAnn Winery and South Stage Cellars with an on-board wine expert and gourmet box lunches. Both sites have lovely wines to taste, as well as informative staff to answer any questions you might have. Yum! Also on this date will be the Science of Wine Gala event held at the ScienceWorks Museum. This event will feature hors d'oeuvres from more than 14 restaurants and wineries. There will also be live music and a wine auction. Here is a chance to get just that perfect wine! This will be a nice evening sure to be relaxing and filled with great folks from around the area.
Wine Basics will be held Sunday, May 31 at ScienceWorks. Regional experts will share their knowledge on the fundamentals of wine and winemaking, which will be held at the ScienceWorks Museum. This should prove to be very exciting, informative and filled with wonderful first-hand experiences on winemaking in the valley, as well as solid wine education on many levels. That evening at the Winchester Inn (superb folks, great cuisine) there will be a winemakers dinner. I cannot imagine a better venue for the end of a lovely weekend. The Gibbs do a superb job on every level and the Winchester Inn is a classy, elegant venue for a first-rate cuisine/wine event or an evening with a special person. Their son, Drew (a former wine education student of mine at the university), is becoming quite a fine wine man and doing a superb job at the inn. I think you are in for a real treat.
