Academy Award-winning composer, world music producer and artist Yuval Ron, international percussionist and educator Dror Sinai and musician Eliyahu Sills will be in Ashland for an intimate concert titled "Desert Roots." The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at the Havurah Shir Hadash, 185 N. Mountain Ave., Ashland.

The evening will feature music and stories from the Middle Eastern and North African deserts. There will be Hebrew and Arabic songs from Israel, Yemen, Iraq, Bukhara, Morocco, Tunisia and Andalusia. Woven in between the songs will be travel stories, kabalistic interpretations, Sufi poetry and personal anecdotes of the life and culture that is the source of Middle Eastern music.

Ron, a world-music artist, composer, producer, educator and peace activist, works internationally in film, television, dance and theater. He was invited to perform for the Dalai Lama, for Pir Zia Iniyat Khan (Head of the Sufi International Order), and has produced albums of Turkish master-musician Omar Faruk Tekbilek. In 2006, he won an Oscar for the musical film, "West Bank Story," and in 2004 received the Los Angeles Treasures Award. He has lectured throughout the world at universities including the University of California Los Angeles, John Hopkins University and Berklee College of Music.

Ron is the musical director and oud player for The Yuval Ron Ensemble, which includes Arabic, Jewish and Christian artists who unite the sacred music traditions of Judaism, Sufism and the Armenian Church into an unusual mystical, spiritual and inspiring musical celebration.
