Gaviglio allowed three runs in five innings but received enough run support to pick up a win in his first collegiate start Sunday against Saint Mary's.

A 2008 Ashland High graduate, Gaviglio did not allow a walk for the fourth time in five appearances as the Beavers won 9-3 in Corvallis. Gaviglio improved to 3-0.

Gaviglio's 3.32 ERA ranks No. 1 among Beavers who have pitched at least 12 innings. He also is the team's most efficient pitcher, with 14 strike outs and one walk.

Oregon State (12-5) hosts Hawaii today at 4 p.m. It will be the Beavers' last preseason tune-up prior to Friday's Pac-10-opener at Oregon.

Evan Schleining, Portland State junior tennis player

Schleining won two nip-and-tuck singles matches last week as the Pilots beat UC Riverside and lost to UC Irvine.

Schleining beat UC Irvine's Zach Tsai, 7-6, 7-5, on March 13 and edged Michael Conroy of UC Irvine, 7-6, 7-6, the following day.

Schleining plays No. 6 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Pilots.

Ryan Pittman, CMS junior track and field

Pittman placed in the top 10 of four events in the SCIAC Top Four at Occidental meet on March 14.

Pittman's best showing was in the shot put. He threw the ball 41 feet, 9.25 inches to nab fourth place for CMS.

Pittman also finished fifth in the pole vault (11-5.75), sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (16.94 seconds) and ninth in the discus (114-09).

Next up for the CMS track team is the CA/NV State Championships at UCLA on Saturday.

Max Gordon, Sierra College freshman outfielder

The 2008 Ashland High graduate was Sierra's third-leading batter through 19 games.

Gordon, who batted leadoff for Ashland's state championship team last spring, is batting .343 at Sierra (16-10, 3-3 Big 8) with three doubles and 10 RBIs. He has a .444 on base percentage, has scored 20 runs (second on the team) and has yet to commit an error.

Gordon also had a team-high six stolen bases through the team's first Big 8 game. Statistics for Sierra's last seven games are unavailable.

Natalie Hemphill, Portland State junior distance runner

Hemphill had the fourth-best 800-meter run in school history in the University of Washington's Last Chance Meet on March 11, crossing the finish line fourth in 2:14.97.

Hemphill also posted the school's second-best mile run, placing sixth in 4:53.02.

Portland will compete in the Stanford Invitational on Friday.
