Twenty-four elected positions in Jackson County for slots ranging from school boards to water districts have drawn no candidates for the May 19 special election. The deadline for candidates to file is 5 p.m. today .

"It's fairly common," said Jackson County Clerk Chris Walker. "Sometimes they wait until the last minute."

The positions with no candidates include: Position 3 on the Phoenix-Talent School Board, Position 1 on the Pinehurst School Board, Position 2 on the Prospect School Board, Position 2 on the Rogue River School Board and a Jackson County seat on each of the boards for the Southern Oregon Education Service District Board and Rogue Community College.

The fire districts that have board positions lacking candidates are two positions in Prospect, Position 1 in Colestin in southern Jackson County, Position 2 in Jackson County Rural Fire District No. 3 in northeast Jackson County, Positions 3, 4 and 5 in Jackson County Rural District 5 in Ashland; Positions 3, 4 and 5 in Lake Creek Rural Fire District in Eagle Point; and Positions 1, 3, 4 and 5 in Rogue River.

The Charlotte Anne Water District Board in Phoenix so far has no takers for Positions 2 and 5. Rogue Valley Transportation District has no candidates for Positions 5, 6 and 7.

At least one candidate has filed to run for other openings on the following boards, but many of the races are uncontested:

Ashland schools, Butte Falls schools, Central Point schools, Eagle Point schools, Medford schools, Phoenix-Talent schools, Applegate Rural Fire District 9, Evans Valley Fire District 6, Jackson County Rural Fire District 4, Jackson County Rural Fire District 5, Medford Rural Fire District 2, Rogue Valley Sewer Services, Elk City Water District, Jacksonville Highway Water District and Shady Cove Water District.

Candidates can qualify for the ballot by paying a $10 filing fee or by collecting the signatures of 25 registered voters within the district they are seeking election.
