Crater senior linebacker Darrio Mobley, an instrumental part of the Southern Sky Conference's top defense, was named to the Class 5A all-state second team recently.

Mobley and the Comets allowed just 232.9 yards per game last season.

"He was obviously one of the best linebackers in the state at any level," Crater coach John Beck said. "It's a good honor for him to be recognized."

Crater's junior defensive tackle Mike Bishop, senior linebacker Kenny Fahndrich and junior punter Devin Massey were all defensive honorable-mention selections.

Ashland senior quarterback Talon Haggard and senior defensive end Dan Cowan were honorable mention selections as was Eagle Point senior wide receiver Garrett Davis.

Fahndrich and Mobley, the SSC's co-defensive players of the year, provided Crater with one of the strongest linebacking corps in Class 5A. Mobley is considering multiple junior colleges while Fahndrich has received interest from NCAA Div. III schools.

"We only had two or three seniors that started for us," Beck said. "They (Fahndrich and Mobley) were the ones that were returning, veteran players, and the guys who weren't experienced relied heavily on them."

Bishop, a 6-2, 285-pounder, will be one of the Comets' top returning players next season.

"We are really excited about his future," Beck said. "He can develop into being a really good player at the next level. He's very explosive and has great feet."

Massey will also return for Crater as one of the top punters in the state. He had more than 50 punts last season and averaged 38.7 yards per kick.

"Statistically, he's the best punter we've ever hard at any school," said Beck, who previously coached at North Medford.

Haggard, the co-offensive player of the year in the SSC along with Klamath Union's Jon Amos, led the conference in rushing with 1,229 yards — an 8.1 yards-per-carry average — and also passed for 1,712 yards and 14 touchdowns on 107-of-217 passing. His passing yardage ranked second only to Amos, also an honorable mention all-state selection with 1,722 yards and 19 touchdowns.

"There's only a handful of kids in the nation that have that combination (of statistics)," Ashland coach Charlie Hall said in regards to Haggard's passing and rushing numbers. "He's got God-given abilities, but he's also a great competitor. When he's got the ball last, you can never count him out."

Haggard is considering junior colleges in Arizona.

Hall described Cowan, a 6-0, 170-pounder, as "a coach's dream."

"Dan is a self-made player," Hall said. "He relies on technique and is a student of the game. He's not going to be a dominant player, but he is so smart and very difficult to attack."

Eagle Point's Davis led the conference in total receptions with 65, was second in yards behind Ashland's Charlie Sebrell with 804 and had eight touchdowns.

At the Class 4A level, North Valley was recognized with four players on the all-state list after reaching the state quarterfinals.

Two players, seniors Paul Gutzman and Andrew Wert, received mention on both sides of the ball.

Gutzman, a 6-4, 270-pounder, was a second-team guard and honorable mention linebacker.

"He was huge for us," North Valley coach Todd Willaman said. "He was the team captain along with Andrew. He really made us tick, especially on defense. He doesn't have great speed, but he's always around the football."

Wert was noted as a second-team defensive end and an honorable mention tackle.

"He's a great blocker with good, quick feet," Willaman said. "Both of those guys were so smart. Any scheme we threw at them, they were able to handle. And their teammates loved them. They were both great leaders."

North Valley's senior defensive end Devon Ogden and defensive back Garrett Schwietert garnered honorable mention honors.

Hidden Valley's Clint Sager also earned mention for his offensive and defensive efforts. He was tabbed a second-team linebacker and honorable mention tight end.

The versatile Sager spent his first two years in the program as a defensive lineman and converted to middle linebacker his junior season.

"He had a tremendous year on both sides of the ball," Hidden Valley coach Jim Figoni said. "I'm honestly disappointed he was not first team on defense. I think he was the best linebacker in the state. But it's still a tremendous honor. He was basically unstoppable."

The Mustangs' Kaylen Maynard, a senior defensive lineman, earned honorable mention.

Illinois Valley senior linebacker Lance Tausaga was also selected as honorable mention.

He led the 1-9 Cougars with 139 total tackles.

"Sideline to sideline, Lance was in on every single tackle," Illinois Valley coach Ray Yarbrough said. "For a guy on a football team that was not at the peak of our greatness to make the all-state team, it just shows what a good player he really was."
