After Ashland post Talon Haggard was injured in the opening minutes, the Grizzlies received another scare in the waning moments only to hang on for a 65-64 first-round victory in the Harlan Carter Invitational at Shasta High School in Redding, Calif.

The Grizzlies (1-1) will square off with against Pleasant Valley of Chico, Calif. in the second round of the three-day tournament at 7 tonight. They'll do so without Haggard, who dislocated a shoulder and returned home to be examined.

Eureka's Greg Allen, who scored 33 points and nailed five of his team's eight 3-pointers, got hot in the fourth and Ashland's 11-point lead began to unravel. But Garrett Tygerson and Adam Pavlich connected on key free throws in the final minutes to derail Eureka's comeback hopes.

Tygerson scored a team-high 16 points, Jordan Rusch added 15 and Charlie Sebrell contributed 10 for the Grizzlies.

Ashland plays in the semifinals at 7 p.m. tonight.
