The Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously agreed Monday night to rename the Darex Family Ice Rink the Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink and accepted a $50,000 donation from the Ashland Rotary Club to help replace the aging rink.

Commissioners said they would like to see a plaque on-site commemorating a past donation from Darex Corporation, which helped pay for the creation of the ice rink years ago. Members of the family who started Darex Corporation are Rotary members and support the name change.

The new rink will cost about $175,000.

Rotary member Michael Donovan said fellow club members are hopeful the donation will prompt others to support the ice rink reconstruction.

"We urge all of the community to come forward and give to this project," he said.

To find out more about donating to the ice rink project, call the Ashland Parks and Recreation Department at 488-5340.
