For the month of September the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognizes Dahna Black as its Student of the Month.

For the month of September the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognizes Dahna Black as its Student of the Month. A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year.

Dahna is the daughter of Feryal Algosaibi and Dennis Black.

Dahna has received many honors and awards while at AHS. Included are: Outstanding Spanish II Student, Sophomore and Senior Homecoming Princess, Outstanding Superior Teacher Aide Student, and a three-time member of the National Honor Society. Her cumulative GPA is 3.968.

Black has demonstrated numerous leadership skills throughout her AHS career. Some of her extracurricular activities include: Speech and Debate team, Mock Trial team, Global Citizen Corps, Peer Jury, National Honor Society (President of AHS Chapter), and Freshman Orientation Counselor. Dahna has also found time to demonstrate her athletic skills by participating on several sports teams, including cross-country, crew, soccer and track and field.

During her AHS career, Black also was a strong contributor to many community service events or projects. These included Relay for Life (three years), Capital Project Advisory Committee (three years), AHS Design Team Construction Committee (two years), AHS Site Council (two years), and the AHS Redesign Team.

Some of her hobbies include reading for pleasure, capoeira, salsa dancing, and snowboarding.

Following graduation, Black is planning a college career with emphasis on International Studies.

The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May, 2009, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship".

The Ashland Kiwanis Club is focused on supporting learning and leadership opportunities for the youth of our community through local fundraising and volunteerism.
