Garrett Tygerson delivered a lifetime first, a rare nine-inning complete game, and helped his own cause by ripping a key two-run triple to lead the Ashland Pilots to a 5-1 win over Wheatland (Wyo.) in the American Legion Class A regional tournament on Friday at Anacortes, Wash.

The loser-out victory advanced the Pilots (36-10) to the final four of eight-team, double-elimination tournament, where the two-time defending Oregon state champions will play another must-win game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Their opponent had yet to be determined at press time.

Tygerson struck out 10 without a walk against the Lobos, who scored 24 runs against Fairbanks (Alaska) on Thursday.

Ashland, the designated road team, got on the board early when Tygerson made Wheatland starter David Castle pay for back-to-back walks by smacking a drive into the right-centerfield gap, scoring both Ian Kendall and Christian Adam.

The Lobos cut the lead in half in the third when Eric Heatherly singled, stole second then scored on Kyle Lauck's two-out base hit.

That turned out to be Wheatland's final offensive charge, however, as the Lobos failed to capitalize on Castle's complete-game, 12-strikeout performance.

Ashland put the game away in the ninth, scoring three runs on three hits, including Kendall's two-run double.

Kendall was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, leadoff hitter Nick Hall was 2-for-5 and Tygerson 2-for-3.

The tournament wraps up with two games Sunday; the first is scheduled to start at 12:30 p.m. and the second, if necessary, at 4:30 p.m.
