Ashland's 13-year-old Babe Ruth all-star team rode two clutch finishes to a perfect 3-0 record in the pool play portion of the state tournament Friday at Eagle Point.




Ashland, which snared the top seed for the single-elimination bracket, opened the tourney Thursday with a 6-5 win over Josephine County and followed with a pair of wins Friday &

9-2 over Central Point and 9-8 over South Coast. In the win over Josephine County, shortstop Evan Westhelle-Grant's relay throw from center fielder Danial White nailed a Josephine County baserunner at the plate to preserve Ashland's lead.




In the win over South Coast, Ashland pitcher Jamie Flynn picked off a baserunner at second base to end the game.




Westhelle-Grant, Flynn, Crowley and Jack Carroll each pitched well for Ashland, which plays a loser-out quarterfinal game at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at The Yard.




At the plate, the Ashland all-stars were led by Nolan Scott and Logan McKelvey. Scott was 3-for-5 in the win over Central Point and came through with a key two-run single against South Coast, while McKelvey had a double against Central Point and went 2-for-2 with two walks against South Coast.

At Klamath Falls, Ashland managed just three hits in a 4-0 loss to Upper Rogue in a state tournament pool play game Friday at Eagle Point.




The loss dropped Ashland to 1-1 in the tournament heading into its last pool play game Saturday against Coos Bay. Ashland needs a win to guarantee itself a spot in the final four-team championship bracket.




Ashland started the tournament Thursday with a 12-2, five-inning win over Brookings-Harbor.




Taylor Humphrey went 3-for-3 and scored three times, Ethan Schlecht was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs and Billy Hansen was 2-for-2 with two walks and two RBIs. Also for Ashland, A.J. Adams was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.




Track camp




The Ashland Grizzly pole vault, sprint and hurdle camp for boys and girls 11 and over will be held July 28-31 at Ashland High. The camp costs $30 for both sessions or $20 per session. Session 1, for sprinters and hurdlers, goes form 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Session 2, for pole vaulters, goes from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Football camp




The third annual Southern Oregon Lineman Challenge and Passing Competition will be held Thursday at Walter A. Phillips Field.




The passing league competition will begin at 6 p.m. Teams will be matched up to play a 7-on-7 touch football game with all passing.




The lineman competition will be held throughout the evening with a weight lifting competition occurring simultaneously along with the passing league. Timed events will include the 20-yard truck push, the obstacle course relay, the tractor tire flip relay and a tug of war.




Admission is free. Proceeds from the concession stand will go toward the Grizzlies' effort to participate in Pacific Rim Bowl XI, in Kobe, Japan next summer.
