Students from Ashland Middle School's Roots and Shoots program drove to Portland Wednesday morning, April 25, to meet with Dr. Jane Goodall and share with her activities in which the group has been involved.

Roots and Shoots is guided by the founding principles and vision of Dr. Jane Goodall, renowned primatologist, environmentalist and humanitarian.

Her belief that young people, when they realize that what they do truly makes a difference, can change the world, is at the heart of the program.

The program &

dedicated to inspiring tomorrow's leaders today &

aims to motivate young people to learn about pertinent issues facing their local and global communities and help them actually design, lead and implement their own projects as a means of solving them.

Inspired by their visit with Dr. Jane, the AMS Roots and Shoots group has decided to take action by supporting the ReBirth the Earth: Trees for Tomorrow campaign that will help in both Tanzania and the United States.

They will be seeking tree sponsorships of $15 per tree. The money will go toward establishing new tree nurseries in Tanzania.

Locally, the group will plant trees that have been donated by BLM.

To sponsor a tree, please stop by Ashland Middle School at 100 Walker Ave. during the Bear Fair on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. or contact Kristi Healy at 482-1611 ext. 211.
