Ashland's depth overcame Thurston's strength at the top in a District 4 boys tennis dual Friday at Hunter Park.

The visiting Colts took the No. — singles and No. — doubles matches in straight sets, but the Grizzlies dominated the rest for a 6-2 team victory.

Nick Cross, Nate Harris and Noah Kass each picked up quick singles victories for Ashland, which improved to 4-2 heading into a Saturday doubleheader against North Eugene and Springfield.

At the top spot, Ashland senior Sean Cleveland battled back from a 5-1 deficit in the second set to get within 5-4, but was denied in the 10th game when Jeff Forrest's forehand clipped the top of the net and trickled over on match point.

"He battles a lot of nerves and that always has an affect early in the match because then he's playing uphill," Ashland head coach Dick Streng said of Cleveland. "He's made great improvements in his game &

his serve is so solid. It's just making the right decision with the placement of his shot. He's still growing there."

In doubles action, Ashland's No. 2 tandem of Jeff Laskos and Quincy Briscoe defeated Chris Murphy and Joe Valdez convincingly, 6-1, 6-0, and Ashland's Clint Gorbett and Alex Harris beat L.J. Duey and Robert Bolkan in the No. — doubles match, 6-1, 6-2.

Streng said aggressiveness was key in Ashland's doubles victories.

"We've worked hard with all the doubles guys with coming in behind their serves and it goes from top to bottom," he said. "This is the first year that everybody's doing that consistently, so that's a real plus for me to see that happen."
