For the month of April, 2008, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognizes Isabella Thorndike as its Student of the Month. A senior student from the Ashland High School is honored each month during the school year.




Isabella is the daughter of Dan and Joan Thorndike.




In preparation for her college career, Isabella has chosen to take many high level and advanced classes. Her overall GPA is 4.0, she currently ranks first in her class of 245, and she has been on the National Honor Society each of the past two years. She has completed — AP classes of Composition, Government and English Literature.




Isabella has received many honors and awards while at AHS. Included in these are American Studies Student of the Year, Advanced Conditioning Student of the Year, Oregon State High School Alpine Ski Champion (sophomore and junior years), and USA National Rowing Championship (7th place women's doubles).




She has exhibited athletic skills, as evidenced by her being on the AHS Ski team 4 years (and captain once), Ashland Rowing Club team 4 years (and captain twice), and the Pacific Northwest Ski Association/Mount Ashland Racing Association two years.




Isabella has also been highly involved in the school community. She has been in the Amnesty International Club, on the Peer Jury, on the Spring and Winter Athletics Leadership Committees, in the Chamber Orchestra, and was a part of the Model United Nations. She has been a Fresh Start counselor, Site Council student representative, student tutor, and Global Citizens Corps Officer. Isabella has also been a member of the Key Club, an organization sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Ashland.




During her spare time, Isabella has worked at Bellisima Catering, Enchanted Florist, Fry Family Farms Grower's Market, Lela's Caf&

233;, Luthiers, and as a professional photographer's assistant.




She enjoys traveling, and has been to Chile, Canada, France, The Netherlands, England, and Wales. She also enjoys photography, music and dance.




Following graduation from AHS, Isabella will be attending Pitzer College in Claremont, Calif. She is undecided about her academic focus at this time, but is very interested in taking language courses to develop communication skills.




The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. During the month of May, 2008, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with a $1,000 college scholarship. This is called the "Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship."
