Portland police say an officer with the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service shot and killed himself outside a downtown building.
Police said the federal officer called the dispatch center for the Federal Protective Service about 5:30 a.m. this morning and said he was outside the Gus. J. Solomon U.S. Courthouse building and was going to kill himself.
Sergeant Brian Schmautz, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau, said the man was dead by the time officers arrived. His body was on the sidewalk.
Police did not immediately identify him. Schmautz says he was about 50 and had been assigned to the building.
It formerly housed federal courts and now has a Postal Service office.
