David Gabriel is counting on "a little help from his friends." He required emergency, life-saving surgery in October and was hospitalized for two weeks at Ashland Community Hospital. Expenses were $57,000. Even with insurance, Gabriel still owes $24,000. To help him raise money for medical expenses.

Entertainers from around Southern Oregon are rallying around Gabriel to help him raise funds to cover his hospital bills. Marshall Fundraising Management, Ashland-based fund-raising and events management firm, will present the "David Gabriel Benefit Variety Show" starting at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 20, at The Historic Ashland Armory, 208 Oak St., Ashland.

Gabriel has appeared on stage at Camelot Theatre many times, most recently as the Baker in "Into the Woods" and the fiery John Adams in "1776." With life partner Laura Derocher and friends, David conceived, co-wrote, co-produced and co-performed an original musical variety show, "Divine Lunacy." He sings Paul's parts and play's Ringo's drums in the Beatles cover band, The Nowhere Men. He recently was featured in a winter tour with Rogue Opera's "Opera in the Schools" program.

Camelot Theatre's Artistic Director Livia Genise and Radio host and author Jeff Golden will serve as the evening's co-emcees. Performers include The Hamazons, Derocher, Paula Flowers, Renee Hewitt, Heather Hutton, Karen Lovely, Richard Williams, Gayle Wilson and Gabriel himself. The Nowhere Men, featuring Dave Marston, Brent Norton and Joe Cahoon, will cap off the evening with lively Beatles tunes for dancing.

Marshall Fundraising Management, headed by Joy and Larry Marshall, represents local, regional, national and global non-profit organization clients. They advise them on fund-raising strategies and organize special events to build their awareness, visibility and funding income.

All participants are donating their time and services. Tickets are $25 and are available at the door and at Paddington Station and The Music Coop in Ashland. All proceeds will go toward payment of Gabriel's medical bills. Those who cannot attend this event, but who wish to make a contribution, as well as those who wish to donate more, may send their checks to the David King Medical Expense Fund ("King" is Gabriel's legal surname) at Umpqua Bank, 250 N. Pioneer St., Ashland, OR 97520.
