St. Clair Productions, in conjunction with Havurah Shir Hadash, will present the sacred vocal ensemble Ya Elah in concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 5, at Havurah Shir Hadash, 185, N. Mountain, Ashland.
Accompanied by harpist Diana Rowan, Ya Elah performs the original compositions of Bon Singer, best known for her work as artistic director of the women's choir Kitka. Erica Leonard, Cyrise Beatty, Evelie Posch and Elana Segal join Bon Singer in Ya Elah.
In addition to the concert, members of Ya Elah will present a workshop, "Discovering the Voice of Renewal With Ya Elah," from 12:30 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, at the Headwaters Building, Fourth and C streets, Ashland. Participants will learn simple polyphonic chant and song, easy movement and guided meditation set to the harmonies of Ya Elah's music. The cost is $25.
Originally based primarily in the Jewish tradition, the music of Ya Elah now encompasses many faiths and cultures. Words are drawn from the sacred texts and poetry. The music, composed by Singer, is influenced by Bulgarian village songs, Middle Eastern melodies and Medieval choral works. The singers have backgrounds in cantorial, folk, jazz and various ethnic and classical styles. Audience participation is often encouraged as Ya Elah seeks to move and inspire its audiences, not merely to entertain them.
Tickets are $20 in advance, $22 at the door, and $10 for youth 12 to 17. Children under 12 are admitted free. Tickets are available at the Music Coop in Ashland, online at or by calling 535-3562.
