Police will conduct crosswalk stings on Wednesday along Siskiyou Boulevard in front of Southern Oregon University.

Although police have already been writing more tickets since the death of SOU student Gladys Jimenez after she was struck by a car while crossing the boulevard in the same area two weeks ago, Wednesday's operation is designed to increase awareness among drivers, Police Chief Terry Holderness said.

Drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians during the sting will be ticketed.

"The real reason to put a sting together is to publicize something," Holderness said. "We have been out writing tickets, and it's important to let people know that we do that."

Police have conducted similar stings in the past, both along Siskiyou Boulevard and downtown.
