MOUNT ASHLAND &

Ashland juniors Dylan Hartsell and Mimi Charter took big steps toward securing spots at the state snowboarding championships on Sunday, winning the Southern League Slope Style competitions on Mount Ashland.

Charter won for the second time in as many weeks, edging North Medford senior Adrien Young 234-224 in the girls event. The results don't guarantee a spot at state &

the number of competitors the district is allotted will be determined later this week &

but it seems likely that both Charter and Young will be on their way to the March 6-8 event at the Timberline ski area on Mount Hood.

"On any day, Adrien and Mimi would be trading the top position," Ashland coach Matt Faurot said.

Competitors are judged on degree of difficulty, landing, overall style and height of jumps on two jumps, one box and one rail along the 300-yard course. A score of 400 represents a perfect run. Each competitor is given two runs and only the best score is counted.

St. Mary's Lauren Angel finished third at 213. Ashland's Kelsey Westhelle-Grant turned in a personal-best sixth-place finish at 191.

On the boys side, Hartsell made a major improvement over his 14th place showing a week earlier. He turned in the day's best run on the second time down the mountain, posting a 304 score.

"On his second run, he locked all the landings," Faurot said of Hartsell. "It was clear he landed his big spins."

Ashland teammate Jay Barton, who won last week's event, was second with a 299 score, while South Medford's Sy Murdoch was third at 298. All look to be in line for state meet berths.

"Between Jay, Sy and Dylan, it was very close," Faurot said. "Jay is putting together run after run."

Ashland's Noa Yates, who finished second in last week's competition, suffered a grade one shoulder separation in practice before the competition began and did not compete Sunday. He is expected to be sidelined for up to a week, but could be ready for the state meet.

The next event is a halfpipe at Mount Shasta on Friday, followed by a boardercross race at Mount Ashland next Saturday at 10 a.m.
