For the month of January, the Kiwanis Club of Ashland recognizes Colette Par&

233;-Miller as the Student of the Month.

Kiwanis honors a senior student from Ashland High School each month during the school year.

In preparation for her college career, Colette pursued an education about which she is passionate. She spent eight years in the Southern Oregon Waldorf School absorbing a unique and balanced education.

As an incoming freshman, she had the desire to pursue the French language, and she is currently taking French IV. She took a trip to France this past summer with her French class to experience the culture firsthand.

Colette incorporated an art class every year in high school. She has won both the Best of the Best Art Student award and an AHAA art scholarship for three consecutive years. Colette has won contests to display her artwork on local posters for community events and was awarded a scholarship for the Early College Program in 2006 through the School of the Art Institute in Chicago.

Colette has also participated in and studied music all four years in high school. She has been in the Pep Band and Marching Band, as well as the Ashland High Symphonic Band. Colette plays the French horn. The award for Outstanding Symphonic Band Student was bestowed upon her in 2005.

In 2007, Colette was named Outstanding Psychology Student. In psychology class she had the opportunity to learn more about art therapy. She hopes to one day pursue art therapy as a way to give back to others and incorporate her love of helping with her love of art.

Colette holds a competitive 3.99 GPA.

Colette has participated every year in the AHS freshman mentoring program called Fresh Start. She applied each year and was nominated by teachers to participate in this pivotal event for the incoming freshman as a Fresh Start counselor. This year, she actually holds the top honor of Fresh Start Student Organizer. This position requires her to be the Director's right hand and the liaison between him and the other Fresh Start counselors.

Colette has applied to 10 colleges and has thus far been accepted by at least two.

The Student of the Month receives an award certificate and a $50 savings bond. In May, two of the nine monthly winners for the current school year will be further honored with the $1,000 Tommy Laird Kiwanis Scholarship.
