CENTRAL POINT &

Ashland's Wilder Schaaf and Zach Markovich went 1-2 to rule the individual matchup and Klamath Union took the boys team title at the Southern Sky Conference pre-district cross country meet Thursday at the Jackson County Expo.

Schaaf, a sophomore, covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes and 18 seconds. Markovich, a freshman, was clocked in 17:44.

Rounding out the top five were Charles Warrington (17:59) and Nick Anderson (18:16) of Klamath Union and James Croft (18:17) of Crater.

Klamath Union finished with 43 points to beat out Crater and Ashland for the team title. The Comets and Grizzlies tied for second with 50 points each.

However, Crater held out its top six runners.

"We wanted to get some of our JV kids varsity experience, and they got it," explained Crater coach Justin Loftus, whose Comets won the Class 5A state title last year. "And we're developing kids for down the line."

In the girls' race, Klamath Union's Chelsa McDonnell edged out Ashland's Aria Hemphill for top honors. McDonnell hit the finish line of the 5K race in 21:06 to Hemphill's 21:10.

Two other Ashland runners &

Seena Frantz and Haley Beal &

finished third and fourth as the Grizzly girls easily won the team title with 22 points. Crater, which rested its top four girls, was second with 44 points.
