A young man lost an eye after shooting himself in the face during a party, police said.
Charles C. Roth, 19, of Salem was listed in serious condition Monday at Oregon Health Science University Hospital in Portland.
Roth shot himself late Sunday during a party where people were drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, Salem police Lt. Dan Dietz said.
Someone at the party was showing off a 9 mm handgun to others when Roth picked it up. Thinking the gun was not loaded, he put it to his face and pulled the trigger.
The bullet tore through his cheek and exited his forehead, Dietz said.
Jessica Spooner, a guest at a home two doors down, said she heard a string of firecrackers go off, followed by silence and then a loud bang.
"I was like, 'Was that a gun?'" Spooner said. "We didn't even know there was a party there, and then there were all these kids running down the street away from the house."
