The Ashland 16-U softball team took first place last weekend in the Gibson State Tune-up tournament in Eugene.

The Ashland girls, who won four of five games, came out strong in the tournament, beating McKay 19-1 in the opening game on Saturday. Ashland then dropped a close game to Southern Oregon Coast All-Stars 8-7.

Ashland came back strong in Sunday's elimination day to beat the Roseburg Warriors 3-1. Against Grants Pass the Ashland girls played an errorless game to win 2-1. That placed Ashland against the only undefeated team in the tournament, SOCS, for the championship.

Ashland had a combined 11 hits against SOCS to win 9-4 and claim the title. The Grizzlies scored 40 runs in the tournament while holding their opponents to just 16.

Ashland improved its record to 16-5 and has taken two first-place trophies and one third in tournament play this year. This weekend the Grizzlies will be playing in the state tournament in Eugene.
