Jesse Hilyard struck out six and allowed one run in 5 1-3 innings to lead South Suburban to a 5-2 victory over Ashland on Monday in the 11-12 Little League all-stars District 6 baseball tournament at Hunter Park.

The win ends Ashland's two-year reign as district champion and sends South Suburban to the loser's bracket finals, where it will face Klamath Basin at 6 p.m. tonight. Basin was bounced into the loser's bracket by Medford Blue, which remained undefeated with a 7-0 win.

Against Ashland, South Suburban scored three runs in the first inning to grab the early momentum and increased its lead to 4-0 before Ashland got on the board. Ashland cut the deficit to 5-2 and had a runner on first with one out in the sixth but a pair of South relief pitchers clinched the win with consecutive strikeouts.

Ashland starting pitcher William Crowley allowed five hits and struck out four in a solid complete-game performance. Ashland was led at the plate by Logan McKelvey, who went 2-for-2 with a double.

For South, Hilyard helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with a triple and scored twice.

The double-elimination tournament wraps up Wednesday or Thursday, depending on which team wins Wednesday night's game.

The Tidings erroneously reported on Saturday that Alec Parker hit a two-run home run for Medford Blue in the District 6 11/12 all-star baseball tournament.

Kyle Packard hit the home run for Medford Blue, which beat Ashland 10-0 in four innings.
