Singer Emy Phelps will headline an evening at the Historic Ashland Armory beginning at 5:30 p.m. July 5, when the community comes together to raise roofs over the heads of more than 30 Guanajuato families.

Also on tap for the evening will be live and silent auctions with an array of packages to buy, from a week in a luxury home in Puerto Vallarta to dinner for 12 at a winery with Oregon Shakespeare Festival actors.

"We've had an incredible outpouring from all corners of the community for this event," co-chair Brian Conrad said. "Once people learned how great the need was for housing and how far even the smallest contribution can be stretched, they bought in."

The Mexican program, Mi Casa Diferente, leverages every donation of $650 three times to provide the building materials necessary for a one-family dwelling.

"For nearly all of these folks, it's the first home they've ever owned," co-chair Angelica Ruppe said. Ruppe grew up in Guanajuato and came to SOU for graduate school.

Also performing that night will be the local dance troupe Ballet Folklorico. Tickets for $30 are available at Paddington's Station and the Music Coop. Tickets entitle one to a gourmet Mexican dinner.
